Astros Two Points Shy Of Playoff Spot

North York – Monday, September 7 – The North York Astros defeated the London City team on Friday, September 4 eliminating them and coming within two points of the St. Catharines Wolves, holders of the last playoff spot.

Forward Zakariae Mahrady opened the scoring at the 14th minute mark for North York Astros and Gersi Xhuti made it 2-0 at 69 minutes. Midfielder Cedric Mpununu scored a third goal for North York at 79 minutes and Diego Maradona scored from the penalty spot for a 4-0 Astros lead at 87 minutes.  London City midfielder 18 year-old Nick Belanger struck his first goal in the Canadian Soccer League in added time for a 4-1 final score in favour of the Astros.

 

This was the fourth win of the season for the Astros and the third win for North York’s goalkeeper Euloge Awitor. Pavel Zaslavsky, who is filling in for interim coach Vladimir Klinovsky, out of the country on personal matters until September 7, was extremely happy with the win and said, “The players were hungry again tonight and I expect them to continue their ways on Wednesday evening”.

 

The Astros are facing first place team Toronto Croatia on Wednesday September 9 at Centennial Park, kick off is set for 7pm. A win there would propel the Astros into the final playoff spot.

 

 

North York Astros next home game is on September 19 versus TFC Academy at Esther Shiner Stadium. Kick off is set for 3pm.
